AD. Life is good in the seaside town of Pompeii, jewel of the ancient
Roman Empire. Aqueducts bring water to the homes, games occur daily at
the Colosseum, and Mount Vesuvius quietly towers nearby. All is well
until Philosophers stand up at the Consul meeting and warn of imminent
doom: tectonic plates shifting under the earth's surface will cause Mount
Vesuvius to erupt and destroy Pompeii. Now, the Ancient Romans know a thing or two about geology. After all, they had turned stones into roads and sidewalks. They even used rocks to build great arches. But in ancient Roman tradition, nobody dared upset the gods by predicting disaster, especially by underground rocks that couldn't be seen. When Messengers report the Oracle's vision, that Pompeii will be "famous for all time," the Consul think the Philosophers' warnings are surely crazy. But that morning, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius shocks Pompeii. The sky darkens with ash. The city is buried under falling rock and lava. Does anyone survive the fire of Vesuvius? * * *
